Benjamin Ries, B.A.(Hons.) (Waterloo, 2006), J.D. (Toronto, 2009), LL.M. (Toronto, 2011) supervises the Housing Law division at DLS. As a law student, he served as a DLS volunteer, division leader, summer student and executive member. Ben articled with Ontario’s Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing, was called to the Ontario bar in 2010, served as duty counsel at the Landlord and Tenant Board, and practiced as a staff lawyer in four other community legal clinics between Hamilton and downtown Toronto. Ben returned to DLS as a supervising lawyer in 2014 and was admitted to the New York bar in 2015, because you just never know where you might end up.
Ben currently serves as President of the Association for Canadian Clinical Legal Education, is an active member of the Greater Toronto Clinic Housing Advocates (GTCHA). Ben also belongs to the Health Justice Faculty affiliated with St. Michael’s Academic Family Health Team and recently served as Interim Director of Legal Services for the Community Legal Clinic of York Region. His outside interests include photography, bass guitar, hiking, paddling, off-grid solar electricity and building sciences.
